Since the winch is 8 to 1, unless the skipper gybes very slowly or the pole person can crank extremely fast it is difficult to get the pole up to the windward side fast enough to avoid some type of load on it. The pole moves to center easy enough, but bringing it over the next 15-20 degrees does take some strength. This comment is refering to sailing in winds 12 knots plus. Typical in the summer on the SF bay.
