Aboard Cascade, we are constantly changing the rig tension. In lighter winds we have even taken the spinnaker halyard to the bow pulpit, tensioned the spin halyard lightly, and then eased the rig tensioner WAY off to induce headstay sag. Once downwind, it is important to put the rig tensioner back on. Rarely do we go to the full 1000 lbs, though we will get quite close to it when the breeze picks up to 15+. As far as sighting the adjustment, we have one of those numbered vinyl "rulers" one can buy in most marine stores placed on the side of the mast and use the top of the swage fitting as the reference point. Cheers, Steve
